PCPS Proud

Superintendent Of Polk County Public SchoolsDear families,

During this time of year, my thoughts inevitably return to one word: gratitude.

Yes, we will soon be bracing for all the excitement, stress and joy of the holiday season.

But I’ve always appreciated how Thanksgiving affords us a chance to reflect on the many blessings in our lives. In addition, Veterans Day helps us recognize the incredible sacrifice and service of all members of the United States Armed Forces.

This month — like none other — can inspire us to adopt an attitude of gratitude.

For instance, I am incredibly grateful to be working alongside our more than 13,000 PCPS teachers and staff members. These amazing individuals make public education possible.

They serve so many different roles — administrators, teachers, paraeducators, nurses, nutrition staff, custodial staff, guardians, secretaries, coaches, maintenance staff and so much more! However, each person helps transform our schools into loving, secure places where students can grow academically, socially and emotionally.

At the start of this thankful season, I’m looking forward to the Inspire Awards on Friday, Nov. 7.

This is the most appropriately named celebration. We come together to celebrate the inspirational and heartwarming stories of our finalists and all honorees for Teacher and School-Related Employee of the Year.

You can learn more about each finalist by visiting: polkschoolsfl.com/inspire

If you want to learn what drives our educators and school staff to dedicate themselves to serving our students, tune into the livestream on the district’s YouTube channel: youtube.com/polkcountypublicschools

I would also like to thank the Inspire Awards generous sponsors for supporting this annual celebration.

And thank you for supporting our monthly newsletter. Please enjoy reading about some of the wonderful students, staff members, schools, departments, and programs that make our district so special.

Sincerely,

Frederick Heid
Superintendent

School & Department Highlights
Cleveland Court Elementary

Cleveland Court Elementary thanks its community partners and businesses for supporting and encouraging students to always strive for excellence. .

Cleveland Court Elementary

Built in 1927, Cleveland Court Elementary has a rich history, including serving as a facility to build, assemble, and paint Patrol Torpedo (PT) boats during World War II.

However, since 1947, Cleveland Court has served as a neighborhood school, earning a reputation for academic excellence.

In fact, the school has been recognized as a School of Excellence by the State of Florida due to students’ high performing academic achievements.

Students are excited about a new monthly incentive program, thanks to community partners and families who contribute to this initiative.

Community partnerships with Lakeland Kiwanis, Tijuana Flats, Family Fun Center, CiCi's Pizza, Grillmaster, and Chuck E. Cheese feature quarterly rewards for students for academics, behavior and attendance.

Rochelle School of the Arts

Rochelle students recently crafted customized necklaces featuring their names in binary code, showcasing their potential as future computer engineers and fashion designers.

Rochelle School of the Arts

Rochelle School of the Arts provides students with a STEAM curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math), which encourages critical thinking, autonomy, and creativity.

Rochelle teacher Simoni Bonadies was recently named Educator of the Year by the Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance.

Throughout the year, students support various community events and outreach programs, including visiting nursing homes, participating in holiday parades, performing at the Betsey Kay Finch Performing Arts Foundation’s annual fundraiser, and submitting artworks for exhibitions at the Dali Museum.

Parents and community members are invited to arts performances on campus.

In 2023, a more than $500,000 renovation project was completed that modernized the school’s auditorium into a modern home for performing arts. Funding was made possible by Polk County’s half-cent sales tax, which voters renewed in 2018.

Lake Gibson High

In May, Jessie Whitehead and Emmalee Robertson were among the 27 graduates of Lake Gibson High who earned their associate of arts degrees from Polk State College.

Lake Gibson High

Lake Gibson High is proud to offer one of the most extensive dual enrollment programs in the district — empowering students to graduate college and be career ready!

“Our mission to prepare every Brave for success beyond high school,” said Principal Ryan Vann. “Dual enrollment is a great opportunity. Students can challenge themselves with college-level classes while earning college credit without having to pay tuition.”

With 62 sections offered on campus, Lake Gibson’s dual enrollment program ensures that every student can get a jump start on their college experience.

The dual enrollment classes are taught by Lake Gibson’s staff, who are fully credentialed through Southeastern University and Polk State College.

This year, more than 500 students are enrolled in at least one dual enrollment class. Over the past five years, more than 80 students have earned their associate of arts degree from Polk State College before their high school graduation.

HOSA chapter

The WHHS HOSA chapter surrounds the new Heartland HOSA regional president, Danielle Williams.

Career, Technical & Adult Education (CTAE)

Career, Technical & Adult Education is busy preparing students for success beyond the classroom and helping them develop essential skills for entering the workforce.

One fun way students get introduced to various career fields is by joining Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs)!

CTSOs provide opportunities for students to participate in leadership and competitive events that strengthen their knowledge and skills in their chosen career fields. Students build real-world skills, explore careers, and gain a competitive edge for college and the workforce.

Our school district has over 7,800 students involved in CTSOs across the district.

Students collaborate with their families, community partners, and school staff on CTSO service projects, advisory boards, and events.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) began the year with 250 students and advisors at the district meeting, launching service projects for Ronald McDonald House Charities — collecting food donations and supplies for families.

George Jenkins High hosted the Fall Leadership Conference of Heartland HOSA — Future Health Professionals on Sept. 27, welcoming over 400 students and advisors.

FFA students across the county also demonstrated their skills in environmental and agricultural sciences in the Forestry Contest on Oct. 9.

Inspire Awards

The PR Team hosts several special recognition events throughout the year, including the Inspire Awards, which will be held on Nov. 7 and honors each school’s Teacher and School-Related Employee of the Year.

Public Relations & Strategic Partnerships

Every day, PCPS employees and students are accomplishing incredible things and making a difference for our community. Sharing these stories is the PR Team’s mission!

Public Relations & Strategic Partnerships is responsible for establishing effective, transparent communication with PCPS families, staff and all community stakeholders.

The PR Team includes graphic artists, web designers, social media content producers, media relations specialists, videographers, photographers, and event planners.

They create original multimedia content, build strong relationships with members of the media, provide marketing support to schools and departments, and host special recognition events throughout the year.

The PR Team is also responsible for fostering strong “strategic partnerships” with community groups, including nonprofits, local businesses, charities, faith-based organizations, and government agencies.

PCPS recently broke ground

PCPS recently broke ground on a new, $10 million gymnasium at Lakeland Highlands Middle. The Finance department allocates and manages funding for such projects.

Finance Department

Using sound fiscal practices and strategies, the Finance Department oversees the district’s annual budget exceeding $2 billion.

This may sound like a lot of money, but Polk County is one of the lowest funded districts in the state, ranked 62nd out of 67 districts!

PCPS has more than 116,000 students, and each deserves the best educational experience possible. The Finance Department must find innovative ways to maximize available resources to meet students’ needs.

For instance, they work closely and train school administrators on site-based budgeting — which gives principals more freedom when determining how to spend a school’s individual budget.

Finance staff also help allocate and manage funding for various projects and initiatives, from constructing multi-million-dollar school facilities to developing outreach programs supporting students and their families.

The district may operate within tight fiscal constraints, but the Finance team is always exploring how to more effectively and efficiently manage its money matters.

Lake Region’s cadets

Lake Region’s cadets — Clarence Zealor, Mya Lagares, Tatiana Keys, Leticia Rodriguez, and Jhovany Vital (L to R) — earned two NROTC Navy Nurse, two NROTC Marine, and one NROTC MD scholarships.

JROTC Program – Lake Region High

The Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) is an important program at many PCPS schools and is sponsored by the U.S. Armed Forces. JROTC instills discipline and develops leadership skills that students will use in their future military service, or wherever life takes them.

This month, we salute Lake Region High.

The Marine Corps JROTC at Lake Region High School has built a strong foundation for developing exceptional young leaders, emphasizing stewardship, selflessness, and civic responsibility.

For two consecutive years, Lake Region’s cadets led Polk County’s Toys for Tots Program, donating over 300 bicycles and hundreds of toys to underserved children. They supported over two dozen community events, including middle school career and field days. They also organized a charity event in the Dominican Republic, awarding 55 students with medals and 20 with scholarships.

Lake Region’s cadets also excel academically. They earned more than $16 million in scholarships and 25 National Military Scholarships.
